Additional Audience Research

I would want my music to be played on music channels such as 4 music that has current and chart but also alternative music styles. This is because even though the music can sell itself, having the video shown on popular music video channels will help promote it, I don’t want it to be shown on channels such as smash hits where the music tends to just be mainstream and commercial.

To publicise our video I would send my music to local radio stations and then to channel four where they have sections in programmes (The Sunday Show) where they introduce new bands and then try and work my way up to bigger music production companies.

Through analysing Digipaks I have gained ideas along the way, the Digipak as a whole needs to be modelled around what the target audience want to see but for our artist I also want the focus to be on the music itself, I want the Digipak to reflect the artists, it needs to be personal. My expectations of our Digipak will include all of those features, I want it to be personal but still easily recognisable, I am looking at artists such as Mumford & Sons and Tom Odell for inspiration. I personally don’t buy music magazines as I am more prone to buying film magazines such as Empire, I think this is due to the decline in the demand on music magazines, with the rise of the internet people are downloading music or looking to radio or music channels to find out about new music and what’s going on. The internet was the best source to find out information on our artist such as their life, music history, what they are currently doing ect.

When doing our audience feedback we decided to do questionnaires but we didn’t get nearly enough responses so we have decided to also do a survey which can give us more responses from more age ranges as we will be posting them on social networks such as facebook, twitter and tumblr. When we next do audience feedback we will have to be more organised so that we can get a lot of varied responses and not have to spend too much time on it.

MTV first aired on August 1st, 1981. Robert Pittman came up with the idea of MTV, he is known as “The father of MTV”. He is currently CEO of Clear Channel Communications. The first video played was “Video killed the radio start” by The Buggles. The original MTV logo was designed by Frank Olinsky in 1981. The logo was redone in 2010 by MTV’s in house design team to make it wider and more rectangle logo. The very first MTV Video Music Awards (VMA’s) ceremony was held on September 14th 1984. There brands orginal slogan used in 1981 was “You’ll never look at music the same way again”, MTV reached 440 million households globally.
4Music is a music and entertainment channel, the channel first launched on August 15th 2008 replacing The Hits. 4 Music has many programmes such as ‘Today’s 4Music top 10’, ‘Fresh Music Top 20’, ‘Your Official Top 20’,’The 4Music Buzz Chart’, ‘4Music Buzz Chart’, ‘4Music Buzz Chart’,’4Music Big Ones’, ‘UKHot40’ and many more. 4Music appeals to a wide audience and offers many different artists.

MTV is target at mainstream and R&B music viewers, whereas 4Music caters to people who like many different genres of music including indie, acoustic and pop rock.

4Music would be the best channel that could exhibit our music video this because they tailor to a wide range of artsits they show, they also had a a programme called ‘Orange unsigned Act’ which aired last ear as Mobile Act Unsigned on T4, Orange Unsigned Act follows the search for Britain’s next biggest unsigned band but unfortunately that is no longer being aired but there are still opportunities for unsigned artists to showcase there music with 4Music.

4Music shows artists such as Ben Howard and Tom Odell who relate to our artist Erick Baker. This shows that they aim at our genre target audience as well as many others.

According to this print screen our demographic prefers to watch at Saturdays mid-day, Friday mid-day and Sunday mid -day – evening, this between 12-4 o’clock showing times when people finish work or school.

One of my expectations of the music promo that has changed is that I thought the age range was 17-21 but now with research I think it is more 16-25, I think in modern day younger people are interested in alternative music because of more freedom of choice.

It is important to know what channel is best suite for my genre because it could effect sales an views, the sections that are circled are possible times my song could be played and it shows how many views it would have, if my music video was shown it could be vital publicity.

  1. Some detailed explanations, well done. Can you comment on the figures you have circled on www.barb.co.uk and explain why this research was necessary?
