Codes & Conventions of Magazine Adverts

The Codes &  Conventions for a Magazine Advert are:

  1. Visual image/ key to the production (band / artist to take up the majority of the image).
  2. A small image of the digipak.
  3. Clear links between the band’s genre and the magazine’s genre.
  4. Band/ artist name - allow audience to identify with the band/ artist.
  5. Date of release of album/ digipak availability (possible web address).
  6. The name of company/ retail - where the album/ digipak is available to purchase.
  7. The music video must link with the digipak and magazine advertisement, making it distinctive and easily recognisable for our audience – often using similar fonts / images for both advertisements.

This is the magazine advert for Tom Odells 'Long Way Down' album. The image used for his album is the central image, the theme of this advert is very minimalistic, the name of the artist is in the top left corner in bold and the album name underneath, they're the same size so of the same significance, the colour of the album name is different but still in the colour theme, this is it can be identified easier. down the left side there are quotes and rating, this is associating the artist with well known names and a rating shows positivist feedback of the album. At the bottom is the date of release, it isn't stated what the date refers to but you know that is is the release date by having it in bold and on its own it makes it stand out more.

I really like this magazine advert design I think it isn't overly fussy which suits the genre, it is also bold and the image used makes it look vintage. This style is something I would definitely consider as inspiration for my magazine advert.

This is the magazine advert for Ed Sheeran's '+' album. This is a very minimal theme again, I don't like this design as much because I don't think it is eye catching, the text included is very small and the image is very dull. The audience that this magazine advert is directed at need to have something interesting to look at to make them stop and read so I think this design is something I would consider.

The generic Mise En Scene for Indie music magazines tends to be the artist posing naturally or artwork of some sort, the background is either plan or a natural relateable environment e.g forest, street. The text tends to be in bold and the artist name will either be in bold or in the font use for the artists name (star image). There tends to be a minimalistic theme which I like it shows the artist isn't selling themselves as a celebrity but there music and that's all its about.

  1. A useful exploration of different magazine advertisements.

    - How do they defy or adhere to the conventions you mentioned above? What impact will they have on your own work?
